A MAGIC CARPET RIDE Concept and Rationale
CONCEPT
In A MAGIC CARPET RIDE TO LANDS OF ENCHANTMENT students will travel via "magic carpet" (a Persian rug) to seven countries around the world. While students "ride" the magic carpet, they will visit each country as they listen to fairy and folk tales, fables, myths, and legends from that country. Students will learn that people of all lands relate historic events, life lessons andmorals, genealogies, biographies and attempt to explain the unexplainable through written and oral folklore. Students will understand that people all over the world may have cultural differences, but that all people are similar in their needs, hopes, fears and emotions. Students will also be exposed to music, costumes, food and art of each country, as well as become familiar with geography and mapping as they travel from land to land.
Students will learn that people today also use the telling of stories (folklore, fables, etc.) to record historical events, immortalize courageous people, teach and instruct, and for enjoyment and recreation.
RATIONALE (Why is this important?)
The study of other lands through written and oral folklore is significant for the students because all cultures use stories as a record of their people. Studying these stories will help students to bridge understanding between themselves and people around the world.

Magic Carpet End of the Year Celebration
Each Topic contains Key Points, Inquiries, Supplies, Resource Lists for every day of the Adventure. Each day could easily fill two days!
Your young children will be engaged in the world of learning and love every minute of it!
Each EPIC AdventureTM has its own character and personality. Each time we approach a new Adventure, we allow it to dictate its organization and character. We add and subtract different aspects with each unique year. You will see that if you live more than one Adventure in the Academy.
In addition, with each new Adventure, we learned even more about how to teach in a magical, brain-firing way. As you teach your children, you will add and subtract the things that work best for you and your children.
KEY POINTS
The Key Points for all Topics are the key information from the knowledge base that we researched and organized to present to the students.
They include:
- Key Point picture mindmaps - blank
- Key Point picture mindmaps - including Key Point information
- Skill Key Points - to teach the skills needed to accomplish certain Inquiries
INQUIRIES
A set of Inquiry projects accompanies each set of Key Points.
Inquiries are projects that build and expand upon the Key Point information and allow students to work with the Key Point information in a meaningful way that enhances understanding and memory and provides an opportunity to learn needed skills in the context of mearningful work.
Inquiries include work in all the subject areas:
- Language Arts
- History
- Science
- Math
- Art
- Music
- Movement
You will choose which Inquiries you will do together and which and how many the students will choose from. Students may come up with their own Inquiry project ideas, which of course, is great!
RESEARCH PROJECTS
At the beginning of every EPIC AdventureTM, once you have explained the Adventure ahead and what they will learn about throughout the year, students may take a week to ponder which Topic they would like to pursue in a year-long Research Project (explained at the Academy).
At the end of the Adventure, when they complete their Research Projects, they may submit a description, photo samples, etc. to the Academy for a Research Project Expert Certificate and a place in the Researcher's Hall of Heroes.
